Abstract

1338764 Tetrabutyl ammonium derivatives of nickel salts of hydroxythiophenols POLAROID CORP 27 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 56437/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions B5 and G2] The preparation of compounds useful as IR absorbers (see Division G2) is described. In Example 1, a compound of formula is prepared by adding an aqueous nickel nitrate solution to a solution of 1-mercapto-2-naphthol and KOH in ethanol; adding to this mixture tetrabutyl ammonium bromide dissolved in ethanol; adding acetone to this; bubbling air through the resultant mixture and filtering. The resulting precipitate is then recrystallized, and has a melting point of 184-188 degrees. In Example 2, a compound of formula is prepared by adding a solution of nickel nitrate in aqueous ethanol to a solution of o-mercaptophenol and NaOH in aqueous ethanol; adding a solution of tetrabutyl ammonium bromide in ethanol, bubbling air through the resulting mixture; collecting the precipitate; and recrystallizing. The melting point is 184-188‹ C.
