1496770 Carbostyril derivatives OTSUKA PHARMACEUTICAL CO Ltd 27 Dec 1974 [8 Nov 1974 (4) 11 Nov 1974 (3)] 55929/74 Heading C2C Novel compounds Ia and Ib (R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are H or 1-4 C alkyl, at least one of R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> being alkyl; and R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are H, 1-4 C alkyl, aryl-1-4 C alkyl or 4-6 C cycloalkyl; or -NR<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP> is a 5- or 6-membered, optionally substituted, heterocyclic ring containing 1 or 2 N, O or S atoms as heteroatoms) and acid addition salts thereof are prepared by: (i) catalytic hydrogenation of a compound Ia to give a compound Ib; (ii) catalytic hydrogenation of a compound II or VIIb or (iii) alkylation of a compound VIIIa or VIIIb Compounds of Formulae II, VIIb, Villa and VIIIb are described and claimed in Specifications 1,496,871; 1,496,873; 1,496,875; 1,496,766 and 1,496,767 respectively. Pharmaceutical compositions, useful as bronchodilators, peripheral vasodilators and antihypertensives, comprise a compound I together with a suitable diluent and/or carrier.
