Abstract

1338442 Easy-opening cans AMERICAN CAN CO 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 23866/71 Heading B8D A pull tab 10 riveted to a scoreline-defined removable panel of an aluminium can end, comprises a flat web portion 22 joined to a nose portion 28 by a rounded shoulder portion 26 whereby the nose portion is spaced above the panel in a plane parallel to the plane of the web portion, and a rib 32 in the nose portion projecting into the space between the planes and extending from the shoulder to the nose portion end. The panel is provided with an ancillary vent scoreline 74 which is ruptured prior to the panel-defining score 62, and the rib localizes the rupturing pressure applied to the score 62 so that the necessary manually-applied opening force is reduced and enables the tab to be made of aluminium. A further pair of scorelines 88 are provided in the panel portion between the scorelines 64 and 74, said pair of scorelines defining a flexural axis about which the panel portion pivots when the tab is raised to effect rupturing of the scorelines 62 and 74. The panel may be of relatively small size.
