Abstract

1337670 Electrodes AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 26 Oct 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 49716/71 Heading A5R An electrode for use with a device for electrically stimulating the heart comprises at least one long, thin, flexible electrical conductor, an electrically insulating flexible sleeve enclosing the conductor or conductors and arranged to permit electrical contact between the heart and the conductor or conductors 14, 24, at and/or near one end of the sleeve, a portion 30 of the sleeve adjacent said end being in its unrestrained configuration curved so as to be adapted to curve over and grip the wall of the atrium of the heart, and being sufficiently elastic for the curved configuration to be straightenable for insertion of the sleeve through a blood vessel, and to revert to the curved configuration when unrestrained. The curved portion 30 of the sleeve is provided with axial ridges (16, 17), Figs. 2 to 4 (not shown), of flexible elastic material on the outer and/or inner surfaces of the curved portion. These resilient ridges provide the curved portion 30 with a torsional resistance tending to maintain the curved portion in a planar configuration, and also, the ridges allow the curved portion to be straightened (as shown by the dotted lines 32) for insertion through a blood vessel. Suitable materials for the sleeve are polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyurethane or high medical grade rubber, and the conductors are preferably of platinum.
