Abstract

1298010 Electrode constructions; controlling artificial limbs PLESSEY Co Ltd 5 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 54972/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division H2] A percutaneous myoelectrode system for stimulating muscles (e.g. the heart), or for transmitting electrical signals from muscles to artificial limbs, comprises a percutaneous member 1 of electrically conductive microcrystalline carbon material which can be inserted in an aperture in the body tissue 2 so that the surface 1a is flush with the skin surface, one or more connecting members 3 of the carbon material within the percutaneous member and separated therefrom by a layer 5 of insulating material, for example silicon carbide or phenolic resin, one end of each connecting member having an aperture 6 for connecting it to a source or user of electricity outside the body, one or more electrodes 9 which can be connected to a muscle, and a connecting lead 8 joining each electrode to a connecting member 3. A layer 10 of insulating material may be included to isolate the ends of the members 3 from each other, and the sides of the member 1 which engage with the tissue may be roughened. The connecting lead 8 may be a carbon fibre filament.
