Abstract

1313486 Electromedical apparatus SIEMENS AG 9 April 1971 [24 Jan 1970] 20178/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division G1 A number of different physiological body parameters, e.g. heart beats, respiration rate, and body temperature, are measured electrically by a number of detectors mounted on an oesophagus probe. As shown, the probe includes sections of flexible plastics tubing 1 interconnected by e.c.g. electrodes 2, 4, 5 and an insulating member 6 carrying a thermistor 7, a temperature dependent semiconductor 3 being mounted on electrode 2. When the probe is introduced into the nose of a patient, the electrodes 2, 4, 5 lie in the oesophagus and the thermistor 7 in the nose, rings 8 preventing contact with the mucous membrane. In alternatives, the respiration rate may be determined by rheography electrodes or a pressure device arranged to be placed in the oesophagus. Further e.c.g. electrodes may be provided in order to enable selection of the most favourably positioned, and the inactive electrode may be omitted, there being provided an external electrode, e.g. a metal plate, connected to reference potential, on which the patient is supported. The various detectors are provided with conductors 9 which extend through the tubing 1, the conductors 9 being connected to a processing or indicating device, via a connector 10, cable 11 and plug 12.
