Abstract

The endoluminal probe for electromyography of the colon comprises a flexible support made of electrically insulating material. The elongate support (1) is intended to be inserted through the rectum and along the length of the colon. A number of sets of conducting electrodes (2,3,4) are spaced along the length of the support on the external surface. Each electrode is connected to a conductor which passes along the length of the support and which is insulated from the other conductors. A multiple connector is provided on the free end of the cable for linking the probe to electromyography apparatus. The electrodes are pref. made from an 80/20 Ni/Cr alloy. The support may be made of polyurinyl chloride and measure up to 1.5 cm in diameter and be from 120-180 cm in length. The probe is used in the diagnosis of complaints such as diarrhoea and constipation.
