Abstract

1423262 Electrodes MEDTRONIC Inc 16 April 1973 [17 April 1972] 18297/73 Heading A5R A flexible implantable electrical lead 30 comprises two biologically inert conductors 32, 52 encapsulated in a biologically inert insulator 34, the first conductor 32 having a portion which projects through the insulation 34 and is wrapped helically for at least one turn therearound and partially embedded therein to form one electrode, the second conductor 52 projecting through insulation 34 to form the other electrode. The insulation 34 may be silicone rubber and the conductors 32, 52 may be platinum or platinum-iridium alloy. An embedded coil spring 46 defines a lumen through which a stylet may be inserted to guide the lead 30 through a body vessel. In an alternative embodiment, the second conductor (72), Fig. 3, (not shown) and a third conductor (74) terminate in electrodes (86, 88) which may be wrapped around the nerves to be stimulated. In another embodiment, the second conductor (112), Fig. 4, (not shown) terminates in a spiral which is partially embedded in a substrate (118) of the insulator material.
