Abstract

1,119,615. Surgical electrodes. W. M. CHARDACK. 21 April, 1966 [26 April, 1965], No. 17489/66. Heading A5R. [Also in Division H1] An implantable electrode for connection to a cardiac pacemaker comprises an insulating sleeve 6 surrounding a spirally wound conductor 4 or 5 and a removable stylet 15 for imparting rigidity to the electrode. Two spirally wound conductors 4, 5, e.g. of stainless steel, are supported in separate lumens in the sleeve, which may be made of silicone rubber. At the contact end of the electrode, one conductor 5 is connected to a conducting contact ring 8 and the other 4 to a conducting cap 9. The ring and cap, which may be made of platinum, are insulated from one another by a jacket 11 moulded around the ends of the conductors and the sleeve 6. At the terminal end of the electrode each conductor passes through a limb of an insulating boot 14 within which it is connected to a hollow terminal 12, 13. The stylet 15, which may be made of stainless steel, is removably inserted in one of the conductors or in a third lumen in the sleeve 6. this lumen being lined with self-lubricating material e.g. tetrafluoroethylene.
