Abstract

1,147,532. Electrodes. ELECTRO-CATHETER CORP. 23 March, 1966 [16 Aug., 1965], No. 12785/66. Heading A5R. [Also in Division H1] A cardiac electrode for use with an impulse generator for stimulating the heart comprises an inner flexible conductive electrode element 12 with a hooked tip 14, which is surrounded by an outer flexible resilient coiled spring electrode element 16, an insulating sleeve 22 being disposed between the inner and outer elements and the inner element being disposed in electrically conductive relationship with an auxiliary outer electrode element 24 which is coaxial with the outer element 16. The tip 14 and the adjacent part of the outer element 16 are joined by dielectric material 18. The outer element 16 terminates short of the distal end of the inner element 12 where a joint 20 of dielectric material joins the elements. The auxiliary outer electrode element 24, which comprises a conductive coiled spring, surrounds the distal end of the inner element and is connected by the joint 20. An insulating sleeve 30 is removably or fixedly disposed over the device in the region of the joint 20. In use, a conventional impulse generator is connected between the outer and auxiliary outer elements 16, 24 in the region of the sleeve, the proximal end of the device penetrating a ventricle of the heart. Markers 38, 40 indicate the depth of penetration of the device. Electrical connection between the heart and the impulse generator is made through the outer element 16 and via the auxiliary outer element 24 through the inner element 12. In use, the ventricle of the heart is pierced by a needle (50, Fig. 5) carrying a sleeve 52, the proximal end of the electrode then being inserted into the heart through the sleeve after removal of the needle. The sleeve is then removed by sliding it over the electrode.
