Abstract
1446347 Electrosurgical devices DENTSPLY INTERNATIONAL INC 30 Nov 1973 55657/ 73 Heading A5R An electrosurgical device for cutting, coauglating etc., comprises a driver element 16 having a driver coil 39 therein, a transmission line 22 including conductors 41, 422, connected to the ends of said coil, and an earthed sheath 27, a handpiece element 17 having a handpiece coil 46 and a socket (77) Fig. 4 (not shown) therein, element 16 being disposed in said socket, an electrode 54 connected to one end of element 17, an earthed contact loop 72 in element 17 within said socket which engages a metal ring 31 of e.g. copper or brass on the driver element, and a source of radio frequency electric potential which is applied to the driver coil, which coil induces a radio frequency electrical oscillation in the handpiece coil, there being electrical coupling between coil 46 and a patient (301) Fig. 8, (not shown), when the electrode is near said patient. Sheath 27 includes an earthed body of conducting metal covered by an outer dielectric coating. The driver element includes a tubular dielectric member 18, a dielectric head end member 19 mounted in one end of member 18, and a brass rod 36 mounted in member 19, the driver coil being wound on a tubular electromagnetic core 38 mounted on said rod, the lead 422 being connected to one end of the rod, the other end of which rod is connected to the driver coil. Power is supplied to the radio frequency power source from a substantially constant voltage transformer, said power source supplying an uninterrupted or an interrupted oscillation, or a blend of said oscillations. For power inputs of above about 150 watts, an electrode (303) having a relatively large area in contact with the patient's tissues may be used, said electrode being connected through a lead (3031) and capacitance (304) to an earth lead of the device.
