Abstract
1430694 Probe tips WHALEDENT INC 29 Jan 1974 [12 March 1973] 4208/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division H2] A probe unit 10, Fig. 1, for use in an electro-surgical device for applying high level, high frequency voltage to tissue etc, includes a probe tip 33, Fig. 5, inserted removably into a conductive sleeve 32 of a plastics nosepiece 24 of said unit, said tip comprising an insulating generally cylindrical shell 34 having two opposed slots 35 and a narrowed end 66, Fig. 5, and a conductive resilient wire 37 having a portion extending beyond end 66 to form a cutting tip 38 and a portion generally disposed in said shell but having two opposed arcuate portions 36 each passing through a slot 35 and being depressed into said shell on insertion of the shell into the sleeve. The sleeve is electrically connected to a source of voltage by cooperating male and female connectors 30, 20 respectively and leads of a coaxial cable 40. A micro-switch 46 is provided on the end 13 of housing 12 of said unit. The nosepiece has a proximal section provided with a cylindrical recessed portion (61) Fig. 2 (not shown) adapted to be located around a cylindrical end portion (49) an end 13 of said housing, a spring 28 being interposed between said portions. The proximal section of the nosepiece has a cylindrical exterior (60) and a distal section thereof has a frusto-conical exterior. In an alternative embodiment, the distal section (70) Fig. 3, (not shown) is of contraangled form. The wire 37 is a continuous section substantially doubled up, a diamondshaped loop thereof forming the cutting tips in a plane substantially normal to the wire portion generally within the shell. The end 64 of the shell remote from the loop is flared and provided with axial slots 80 for resiliency said end being of plastics material. A neon light 44 indicates when high level, high frequency voltage is being applied to tip 38.
