Abstract

1500214 Implanting electrodes MEDTRONIC INC 17 Feb 1975 [19 Feb 1974] 6651/75 Heading A5R A device for use in implanting an electrode assembly including a flexible electrical conductor 7 in an insulating sheath 19 and having a helical electrode 13 provided with a pointed tip 15, comprises a tube 25 having an opening in the distal end (29) Fig. 1 (not shown), thereof for resiliently receiving a rubber boot 17 of the electrode assembly, a groove (39) being provided through the surface of the tube parallel to the axis thereof and communicating with the tube bore 41 which opens into said distal end opening, the sheath 19 being received in said groove during implantation when electrode 13 is screwed into tissue, and being removed thereafter by an elongate member 43 having a ridge 49 which engages in groove (39) to remove sheath 19 and finally abuts boot 17 to remove it from said distal end opening. Member 43 has a conical end portion 47, the other end thereof having an aperture (55) Fig. 2 (not shown) for receiving a portion 11 of the electrode assembly after implantation of electrode 13. The member 43 can thus be used to bore through tissue to locate portion 11 at a desired position for connection to a power supply under the skin, portion 11 then being removed from aperture (55) Netting 23 at the base of the electrode is stated to enhance fibrotic growth thereby ensuring a secure connection of the electrode to the tissue. The electrode is made of platinum/irridium.
