1337113 Coating apparatus KODAK Ltd 30 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 46816/70 Heading D1L [Also in Division B2] Apparatus for applying liquids to sheers (e.g. of photographic printing paper) comprises a driven applicator roller 1 rotating in a coating trough 3 in the opposite direction to sheet travel, means (not shown) for feeding sheets to the applicator roll and a freely rotatable guide roller 5 disposed above and parallel to the driven applicator roller 1 to engage substantially the whole width of the sheet 9 passing over the contra-rotating applicator, the guide roller 5 having a shaft 6 projecting into a pair of vertically extending slots 7 defined by end walls 8 so that it rests on and rotates with the applicator roll 1 when no sheet is present (Fig. 1, not shown) and is lifted away from the contra-rotating roller by the sheet 9 passing therebetween. The applicator roller I may be of hand rubber, hand plastics material or stainless steel and the freely rotatable guide roller is preferably of stainless steel. In an embodiment particularly adapted for the processing of narrow sheets (Fig. 4) the guide roller 5 is replaced by a segmented guide roller comprising a rigid shaft 11 rigidly suported at its ends and a plurality of lengths of hollow cylinder 12 which are movable vertically with respect to the shaft. The apparatus is particularly adapted for use in applying washing liquid, actuator solution, stop bath liquid, fixing solution or bleaching liquid to photographic sheet.
