Abstract
1329185 Stopper rod actuating devices PONT-A-MOUSSON SA 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 25074/71 Heading F4B A fluid motor V for controlling the movement of a stopper rod 3 in a metallurgical pouring vessel 1 comprises a double-acting piston 6 with a rod 10 connected by a cross member 11 to the stopper rod and a double-acting piston 5 forming an abutment for piston 6, with three -way electromagnetic valves 17, 18 and 19 controlling the supply of pressure fluid through pipes 12, 13 and 14. The piston-rod 10 is larger than a screwed rod 7 extending downwardly from piston 5 and having a nut 9 attached thereto. In operation, Fig. 1, valve 19 is on pressure, valves 17 and 18 being on discharge, the stopper rod 3 being thus held on its seating. Initially valve 19 is placed on discharge and valves 17 and 18 on pressure raising the rod through a distance x. Next valve 19 is placed on pressure and valve 18 on discharge raising the abutment piston 5 through the distance y i.e. until the nut 9 engages the bottom wall of cylinder 4. The piston 6 will move down to the abutment cylinder 5, but no further owing to the aforementioned difference between rods 7 and 10. This closes the stopper rod 3 to an operative position. In a modification (Fig. 4) valve 19 is replaced by a pressure reducing valve and valves 17 and 18 by a single four-way valve.
