Abstract

1329014 Injection moulding POST OFFICE 26 Aug 1971 [26 Aug 1970] 41027/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division H2] An injection mould 3, 4, 5 for jointing or repairing the plastics sheath and/or dielectric of an electric cable includes a mould piece locatable around the cable to define a mould cavity around the joint or portion of cable to be repaired, heating means and cooling means for the cavity, and a moulding material inlet 7 communicating with the cavity through a gate 8 which extends linearly lengthwise of the cavity, the width of the gate 8 being such that material solidifies within it more rapidly than material within the cavity. The gate preferably has a width of the order of 0À01 inch and not greate r than 0À06 inch. The gate may be a continuous linear opening or a plurality of linearly disposed apertures. The heating means may comprise electric cartridge heaters (19) Fig. 1 (not shown). Cooling water may be circulated through a cooling system 10, 11, (12), 13, 14. The mould cavity comprises two portions 3 and 4 of differing diameter connected by a tapered portion 5. In Fig. 8 the mould is shown in operative position on a cable, the smaller diameter portion 3 engaging the cut back end 21 of the outer sheath and the larger diameter portion 4 engaging a polythene sleeve 24 located around packing material 23.
