Abstract
1328440 Tubular heat exchangers; steam generation BABCOCK-ATLANTIQUE 20 July 1971 [22 July 1970] 34048/71 Headings F4A and F4S Heat exchange between primary sodium Nal acting as coolant in a reactor core and secondary sodium Na2 used as a source of heat for a steam generator is effected in a heat exchanger comprising an array of helicoidal tubes 9 disposed around a central sleeve 7 in an elongate cylindrical casing 1 which is closed at the top by a plate 2 and open at the bottom. The lower ends of the helical tubes 9 are connected to a tube plate 6 by way of horizontal tube portions 11 and vertical tube portions 12 disposed within the central sleeve 7. The upper ends of the tubes 9 are connected to an annular tube plate 3 via vertical tube portions 13 which form an annular array around the upper part of the sleeve 7. In use primary sodium enters the heat exchanger through apertures 14 in the upper part of the casing and leaves through the open lower end of the casing whereafter it is collected and then returned to the reactor core. The casing extends through the reactor tank and passes through a horizontal wall 16. The tube plates 3 and 6 are arranged above the level of the primary sodium in the reactor tank whereby their lower faces may be exposed to a neutral atmosphere such as argon.
