Abstract
1327519 Hydraulic reciprocating motors H SIEKE 17 June 1971 [24 Feb 1971 23 April 1971] 28381/71 Heading F1A An actuator piston K, e. g. for tamping railway ballast, is vibrated by connecting its cylinder alternately to hydraulic pressure supply e.g. a pump P or an accumulator, and return r, the quantity supplied being greater than that returned to provide translational movement of the piston during its vibration. A control unit S. T. controlling the vibration frequency and translation speed comprises a valve member 2, Fig.2, rotated by a motor M, e.g. driven by the working liquid and having axial grooves 7, 10 alternately connecting cylinder port a to supply port 3 and return port 4, member 2 being axially movable by lever 8 to control the cross-sectional area of port a and hence the translational speed. A pressure relief valve 12 is provided in member 2. The control unit alternatively may have a fixed valve member and a rotary housing. In Figs.6 to 11 (not shown), the working liquid is supplied to the centre of the valve member. In Figs.12 to 14 (not shown) the actuator is double-acting. In Fig.15 (not shown), the control unit for a double-acting actuator piston comprises a spring- loaded spool valve reciprocated by a multi-lobed cam, the cam lobe shape determining the timing of the connections to supply and return, e.g. the rising flank of the lobe is not as steep as the falling flank. In Fig.16 (not shown), the control unit for a double-acting actuator piston comprises a spool valve with different multi-lobed cams at either end, the valve being biased into driving engagement with a selected cam by an air spring.
