Abstract
1326978 Tubular heat exchangers SVENSKA MASKINVERKEN AB 22 Oct 1971 [7 June 1971] 49201/71 Heading F4S A shell and tube heat exchanger comprises a bundle of heat exchange tubes 8 disposed within an outer casing 1, the outer surface of each tube 8 being provided with rows of parallel closely spaced pins 10 mounted so that their bases are at right angles to the tube walls 11. Each pin 10 has a configuration such that each tube crosssection can be circumscribed by a regular hexagon. As shown, the pins arranged at the hexagon corners are unbent, while the pins in the centre of the sides of the hexagon have the greatest degree of bending. By arranging the pins in this way the tubes can be arranged in a honeycomb pattern, filler bodies 12 only being necessary between outer tubes and the wall of the casing. Within each tube 8, which is closed at its end remote from a tube plate (9, Fig. 1, not shown) from which it is supported, is disposed a concentric tube 7 extending from a second tube plate (6, Fig. 1). In use a first fluid flows from an inlet (4) through the tube (7) to the closed end of tube 8 and then back through the annular space between the two tubes 7 and 8 into a chamber defined between the two tube plates (6 and 9) to finally exit through an outlet (5). A second fluid flows over the tubes (8) between an inlet (2) and outlet (3) in the casing 1.
