Abstract
1326754 Joint-making packing; pipe couplings SOC D'ETUDES VERRIERES APPLIQUEES 26 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 50681/70 Headings F2B and F2G A seal ring formed of a core 5 of incompressible malleable material and a cladding 6, Fig. 1, is disposed between two annular support members 7, 8 of metal to form a joint between two flanged members 1, 2. When the flanges 3, 4 are moved towards each other to deform the seal ring against the resilient action of the support members, the cladding serves to retain the core material during and after deformation. Fig. 10 shows the seal ring in its deformed state with the support members 7, 8 forced apart. The core 5 may be made of lead, zinc, cadmium, tin, aluminium or a plastics material and the cladding 6 may be made of spring or stainless steel, beryllium, bronze or aluminium alloy and coated, if required, with chromium, zinc or P.T.F.E. The cladding may be formed from a tube or rolled from a sheet with the edges joined by welding or crimping; alternatively the cladding may be divided into two or more parts 18, 19, 20 and 21, Fig. 7, with the core material exposed in the slots formed between them.
