Abstract
1326084 Gas discharge display panels OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 8 Sept 1970 [9 Sept 1969] 42844/70 Heading H1D A gas discharge device 10 comprises two spaced flat rectangular gear plates 11 and 12 sealed together to form a gas-filled chamber, the ends of one plate extending beyond the side edges of the other plate, and each plate bearing an array of conductors 13, 14 alternate ones of which extend towards opposite ends of the plate, one of said plates carrying a gas filling tubulation 40 extending perpendicular to the plate. The conductors 13 and 14 may be of gold and may be in the form of wires or printed circuits. The conductor arrays are covered by dielectric films or coatings 15 and 16 of solder glass material which is screened on to the plates in the form of a glass frit and cured in place. The plates 11 and 12 are spaced by rods 19, 20 and 21 or by beads and are sealed by a ceramic sealant 17 applied after curing the coatings 15 and 16. The portions of the conductors 13 and 14 outside the chamber are bent as shown to form groups 13R-G1, 13R-G2 &c which may be contacted by the type of edge connector used with printed circuit boards. The plates 11 and 12 may cross at other than a right-angle to provide a diamond-shaped display area. One plate may be considerably lengthened and crossed by a plurality of other plates to form a plurality of gas chambers. The ends 11L and 11R of plate 11 may be extended to allow room for the conductors 13 to be bent through a rightangle for contact by an edge connector at edge 11B. The gas filling may be a mixture of neon and argon or nitrogen.
