Abstract

1480284 Gas discharge display panels OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 21 June 1974 [22 June 1973] 27588/74 Heading H1D A conductor array for a gaseous discharge display and/or memory panel comprises a non- conductive substrate 25; a plurality of spaced lines 21 of conductive material on said substrate; a dielectric layer 80 covering the ends of said lines, said layer 80 having apertures 70-78 through its thickness which are in registry with and intersect predetermined ones of said lines along predetermined paths which cross a plurality of said lines; and connectors 84, 85, 86 formed as continuous strips of conductive material extending along said predetermined paths and into the apertures intersected by said paths to conductively engage said lines. The spaced lines are in a plurality of groups with the intragroup line spacing such as to provide spatial discharge transfer between discharge subsites defined by adjacent segments of the lines, the intragroup line spacing being also such that discharges in subsites in one group have no effect on subsites in another group. The panel shown is similar to the type described in Specification 1,479,732 in which a discharge cell formed at the crossing points of two pairs of conductors comprises four sub-sites. In the arrangement shown the apertures 70- 78 are holes. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown) the apertures are grooves. The b conductors of the x array are interconnected by a similar arrangement in a terminal strip region 14. The a conductors of the x and y arrays are also connected in groups of three in terminal strip regions 13 and 15. Alternative arrangements for commoning groups of the electrodes are described in one of which (Fig. 6, not shown) the paired conductors have their b conductors adjacent each other instead of alternating with the a conductors as shown in Fig. 1. Operational features are detailed, dimensions and materials specified, and the gas may be Ne-Kr or Ne-Ar, with Ne about 99À7% by wt., at about one atmosphere pressure. Variations in the numbers of conductors in each group are discussed, and may, as example only, be three.
