Abstract

1323422 Splint A E DIXON and M PROCTOR 4 Sept 1970 [6 Aug 1969] 39341/69 Heading A5R A splint comprises a backing member 10 which is sufficiently long to extend from adjacent the bottom of the spine to behind the head, and includes a harness 18 for holding the head in position against the splint, and further harnesses 44 and 52 for securing the torso to the splint. The head harness 18 comprises straps 20 and 26, the strap 26 having sections 28 and 30 of nylon pile fabric which are adhered to each other after the strap 26 is passed through a buckle 22 at the end of strap 20 to secure the harness to the head. A stretchable strap 34 and strap 40 secure the chin whilst a further stretchable strap 32 passes over the head. Further belts 44 and 52 pivotable about bushes 46 and 54 on the back of the splint support the upper and lower parts of the torso respectively, the straps being secured to each other around the torso by means of corresponding sections 46 and 48, and 56 and 58, of nylon pile fabric. Two straps 60 and 66, attached through an aperture 16 at the base of the splint may be passed under the crutch. One strap 66 is long enough to be passed around the shoulders to clip on to the shorter one 60 in front of the body, thus securing the patient from longitudinal movement on the splint. A strap 62 is attached to strap 60 so that the straps 60 and 66 may be pulled through the strip 62 to pass around the hips, rather than passing both straps under the crutch. The backing member may be attached to the front of the body rather than the back, for which a mouth and nose space 14 is provided.
