Abstract

1322701 Temperature control of exothermic reactions N WADDLETON (ANDERSON LUEDEKA FITCH EVEN & TABIN) 29 June 1970 [1 April 1969] 16930/69 Heading B1X Exothermic reactions are controlled by means of indirect cooling fed from a constant level surge drum, wherein any coolant losses due to evaporation are replenished with fresh coolant. In the particular application of converting fatty nitriles to amines reactants are fed into a reactor 1 via an inlet 6, and stirrer 29 is started. The mixture is first heated by passing steam through coil 31 and any excessive condensate collecting in surge drum 32 is removed via lines 36, 50. Pressure control 66 opens valve 34 to atmosphere during this time. Pump 22 circulates the reactants via line 7, heater 2 and header 21 and when the reactants are at the required temperature the valve 34 is closed and the steam heating stopped by closing valve 55. Hydrogen is then introduced into the reactor via sparger 15 and NH 3 through line 16. Heat emitted is controlled by passing a coolant, e.g. H 2 O through the surge drum 32, line 36 and the coil 31. Any coolant vaporising is vented via pressure relief line 33 whereupon the level in drum 32 drops. The level controller 35 then causes valve 40 to open to admit make up coolant. Upon completion of the reaction valves 34, 51 are opened and valve 52 is closed so that the mixture may be further cooled.
