Abstract

<PICT:0392688/III/1> In the hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials and similar exothermic reactions, carried out at temperatures above 300 DEG C., the temperature in the reaction vessel is controlled by passing in indirect heat exchange with the reacting materials and in a closed circuit a cooling medium, e.g. water, the critical temperature of which lies below the reaction temperature and which is introduced in the liquid state under pressure. Middle oil mixed with hydrogen is preheated in heat exchanger BC and in a heater D, and is then introduced into a series of reaction vessels E, J, M, and is cooled in its passage between these vessels in heat exchangers H, L. D, by heat exchange with water introduced under 200 atmospheres pressure through a main U and taken off at a manifold W with reduction of pressure to 50 atmospheres, thus forming steam.
