Abstract

A slurry of alumina containing ore, e.g., bauxite, and caustic soda solution is preheated to 90 DEG -190 DEG C. whilst flowing at more than 0,7 m./sec. before digesting in autoclaves at a higher temperature. The preheating is occasioned by single or multi-pass heat exchangers preferably of the 'stacked tube' type. Unwanted primary natrolite is removed from the initial ore prior to the preheating stage by stirring a slurry of the ore in vats for 6-10 hours at 70 DEG -100 DEG C. when the natrolite is precipitated. Secondary natrolite may be removed similarly at temperatures above 120 DEG C. in vats placed between the heat exchangers or between the final heat exchanger and the first autoclave. In Example 1, bauxite was mixed with a thick caustic dye, stirred for about 10 hours at 95 DEG -100 DEG C., passed through 9 fourpass tube heat exchangers at 1,5 m./sec. after which its temperature was 190 DEG C., and finally led into an autoclave where it was heated to 210 DEG C. for about 1 hour.
