1321320 Road surface marking MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 28 Dec 1970 61388/70 Heading E1G [Also in Divisions G4 and H1] A magnet installation on a roadway for operating a warning inside a vehicle or for controlling the speed of course of a vehicle comprises magnetic particles uniformly distributed in an organic polymeric matrix. Magnetic particles of barium, lead or strontium ferrite, iron oxide, Mn-Bi, or iron protected against oxidation may be dispersed in nitrile or silicone rubber or plasticised polyvinyl chloride. The magnetic material in sheet or tape form may be installed on the roadway, for example in a vertical slot. When a vehicle passes over the magnet, current is induced in a sensor coil on the vehicle, causing operation of warning or controlling means. A strip arranged across the road, or a triangular magnetic plate on the road, operates an alarm on passage of a vehicle in the wrong direction in a one-way street; an electrical circuit on the vehicle comprises the sensor coil, two amplifiers, an R-C branch, a gate switch, and an alarm device. A continuous magnetic strip made up of magnets with their poles arranged alternately in opposite directions may be used for controlling the course or speed of vehicles. The shape of the magnetic material on the roadway may also provide visual information to drivers.
