1321074 Sewing machines W J CLARKSON Ltd 16 June 1971 [19 June 1970 29 March 1971] 29797/70 and 8075/71 Heading D1G A holder for pieces of material, the desired stitching lines on which are not congruent when flat, comprises a base phase 1 having a guide slot 2 corresponding to the desired stitching line, means for locating a plurality of pieces relative to the base plate 1 and means 5 to 8 for distorting at least one of the pieces so that the desired stitching lines become congruent and disposed over the guide slot 2. In Fig. 1 the holder for collar pieces has friction surfaces 17-19, adjustable pivoted flaps 5 to 8 which are retained in position by struts 13, 14, which engage holes 15, 16 selected from alternatives, a guide groove 1a and pivoted parts 3, 4 with apertures 26, 27, 29 and 30 through which the flaps 5 to 8 pass when in use and resilient fingers 28, 32 and 33. In use a two layer undercollar is pressed onto pins 20 and 21 with a notch aligned with the groove 1a and partly overlying the slot 2 and the part 3 is pivoted down, the finger 28, flaps 7, 8 and apertures 26, 27 distorting the undercollar so that its edge approximately follows the centre of the slot 2. The top collar is then placed on the base plate with its edge overlying the remote side of the slot 2 and the part 4 is pivoted onto it, the collar edge then straightening, catches 22, 23 are then rotated. The top collar edge is pushed between the undercollar layers and the holder placed on a sewing machine having a raised bar (broken adjacent the needle hole) extending between a pair of studs for engaging the slot 2 and the collar parts are stitched together. A second holder, Fig. 3, has a plate 40 with locaters 47, 47a and a needle slot 45, a second plate 43 hinged at 44 for holding down a first piece of material and with an offset rib 50 for distorting a second piece of material when a third plate with slots 55, 56 is pivoted about a hinge 42. A guide on the machine engages the slot 55, the needle passing through both slots 45 and 55.
