Class 112 A work holder for maintaining layers of fabric in position for a sewing operation comprises a base member formed with a needle-passing slot, an upper member adapted to overlie. the base member, and means depending from the bottom of the upper member to clamp said layers yieldingly against the base member, said means including an elongated member having a slot therein co-extensive with and in registry with the slot in the base member and resilient means securing the ends of the elongated member to the base member. The work holder, as shown, is used in stitching welted pockets and comprises a base 11 formed with a pair of needle-passing slots 26, 27, and an upper member 13 hinged at 12 to the base and formed with an aperture 19 bridged by a pair of bars 20, 21 resiliently mounted on member 13 by means of spring-biased studs 22, and formed respectively with slots 28, 29 which register with the slots 26, 27 when member 13 is lowered. A bar 15 is hinged at 14 to one side of slot 26. In use the open holder is positioned on a loading table 50 against a stop 60, and a bar 54, hinged under the table top is raised so as to position four pins 53 carried thereby at the respective ends of the slots 26, 27. Material A, formed with a pocket slit B, is then inserted in the holder under the raised bar 15, the pins 53 serving to position the slit B, and bar 54 is lowered to withdraw the pins. Bar 15 is then lowered, a welt piece H is positioned thereagainst, a pocket lining piece M is positioned over the welt piece, another lining piece L is positioned on material A on the other side of slit B, and member 13 is finally lowered and secured in position. In a modification material locating pins are permanently incorporated in the holder and are adjustably situated at the end of the slots 26, 27. The slots may be either straight or curved. A sewing machine for use with the holder is modified by removing the presser bar and feed dog, and by replacing the usual throat plate by a plate 36 formed with a slot 38 bridged centrally by a needle-passing sleeve 39 projecting above the surface of plate 36. Attached adjustably under the latter by screws 41 are plates 43 having upstanding flanges 45 which project through the slot 38 one on each side of sleeve 39. In use sleeve 39 and flanges 45 engage one of the pairs of aligned slots 26, 28 or 27, 29 of the loaded holder to form guide means for the holder when the latteris moved by hand to sew either the welt H and lining M, or the lining L, to the material A, the flanges 45 serving as stops to determine the length of the seams.
