the plane of the top of the arm and has a removeable section extending along the sides of the arm and across at the outer end of the arm so the section can be removed to expose the arm to receive a tubular device on which tubular material can be placed.
Support means for an embroidering frame used for flat work when the table section is in place, and the tubular frame when the table section is removed are provided above the plane of the table.
The present invention relates to an embroidering machine which is provided with a spreading and clamping device making it possible to spread and clamp hose-shaped fabric, knitted material or the like, and to embroider the same.
A device of this type is known, the employment of which requires considerable changes in the heretofore known customary standard way of guiding the embroidery frame and holding the same on the embroidering machine whereby the embroidering machine becomes a one-purpose machine and is unable to embroider other tahn hoseshaped material as, for instance, fiat textile material. This heretofore known device requires hooks for spannning or clamping the material to be embroidered which may endanger delicate textiles.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a spreading and clamping device for embroidering, which will overcome the above mentioned drawbacks.
It is another object of this invention to provide a spreading and clamping device for an embroidering machine which will be so designed that it can, without difficulties, be connected to standard guiding means for embroidery frames.
Still another object of this invention consists in the provision of a spreading and clamping device for embroidering machines which by a few operations can easily be converted from embroidering hose-shaped textiles to embroidering fiat textiles and vice versa.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more clearly from the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a diagrammatic front view of an embroidering machine head with an inserted spreading and clamping device according to the invention.
FIGURE 2 is a section along the line II-II of FIG. 3.
FIGURE 3 is a section along the line IIIIII of FIG. 1.
FIGURE 4 is a section similar to that of FIG. 3 with an embroidery frame for clamping flat textiles.
The objects outlined above have been solved according to the present invention by providing a spreading frame which extends around the bearing arm of an embroidering 3,443,536 Patented May 13, 1969 material to be embroidered is adapted to be pressed into an inner frame provided with holding means, which holding means can be screwed onto the customary or standard guiding linkage for the embroidery frame. With a device of this type, the hose-shaped fabric or knitted goods, for instance a sock, a stocking, or the like can be slipped over the outer frame, the bottom side of which carries the frame for spreading the hose-shaped material to be embroidered. The area of the material to be embroidered can be safely and in a manner which will not endanger the material be clamped by pressing in the inner portion of the embroidery frame.
When employing the embroidering machine for embroidering fiat textiles by means of the customary fiat embroidery frame, the free space between the bearing arm of the embroidering machine and of the table plate can be closed by inserting a filler member.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, and FIG. 1 in particular, the arrangement shown therein comprises an embroidering machine head 1 which is connected to the base plate 2 carrying a bearing arm 3 in the form of a cantilever. Also indicated on embroidering machine head 1 are the guiding means for the upper thread 4, the embroidering needle 5 and, in the bearing arm 3, the gripper and the bobbin capsule holding means 7. Holders 9 (FIGS. 1 and 3) are suspended in the embroiding frame guiding linkage means 8a, 8b, 80, said holder 9 being connected by means of knurled screws 10. The embroidery frame guiding linkage means 8a, 8b, 8c, and the spreading and clamping device 11 connected thereto are reciprocated in conformity with the desired pattern by a non-illustrated punched card automat in a manner well known to an expert in this field so that the clamping goods, for instance, a sock 13 will be embroidered accordingly.
The hose-shaped material to be embroidered is first slipped over the outer frame 11a and the spreading frame 11b, and is so aligned that part of the material which is to be embroidered will be located at the top. Thereupon, this outer frame 11a which carries the spreading frame 11b is pressed over the inner frame whereby the hoseshaped material 13 to be embroidered is clamped or spanned in the position in which the embroidering is to take place. This clamping is advantageously effected outside the embroidering machine. Thereupon, the spreading and clamping device 11 is, by means of its holding members 9, screwed onto the linkage parts 8c.
If, instead of the hose-shaped textiles or the like, it is desired to embroider flat fabrics, it is suggested in conformity with the present invention, to employ an ordinary embroidery frame 12 in conformity with FIG. 4, which is equipped with corresponding means 9a by means of which the said embroidering frame may by screws 10 be connected to the members 80. When employing such an embroidery frame, a filler member 15 is inserted into the free space between the bearing arm 3 and the table plate 14. The said filler member 15 rests upon the supports 16 on the table plate 14 and by means of a screw 18 is connected to rail 17.
It is, of course, to be understood that the present invention is, by no means, limited to the particular device shown in the drawings.
What is claimed is:
1. An embroidery machine having a frame, a head in the frame having an embroidery needle therein, a barlike bearing arm having one end connected to said frame and extending therefrom and having the other end disposed beneath the needle in the head whereby material to be embroidered can be introduced between the needle and said other end of said bearing arm, a support table carried by the frame in about the same plane as the upper surface of said other end of said bearing arm and in surrounding relation to said other end of said bearing arm, a section of said table extending along opposite sides of said bearing arm and on the side of said other end of said bearing arm which faces away from said frame, said section being detachable from the other part of said table to expose the sides and outer end of said bearing arm, and a spreading and clamping means for spreading and clamping material to be embroidered and for supporting the material during embroidering thereof, and support members above the upper level of said table connected to said spreading and clamping means and to said frame for detachably supporting said spreading and clamping means in operative position on said frame.

An embroidery machine according to claim 1 in which said spreading and clamping means comprises a generally flat horizontal frame adapted to spread and clamp material to be embroidered, said frame being adapted to be positioned above and generally parallel to the top surface of said table so said section of the table can be retained therein during use of said spreading and clamping device.
3. An embroidery machine according to claim 1 in which said spreading and clamping means comprises a spreading frame adapted to be telescopically received over the outer end of said arm when said section of said table is removed from the table so that hose-like articles can be drawn over the spreading frame and thereby have one thickness only of the article above said outer end of said arm, an outer frame carried by the spreading frame above the outer end of said arm, an inner frame adapted to be pressed into said outer frame from above to hold the material to be embroidered taut in the region over said outer end of said arm, said support members being connected to said inner frame for holding said spreading and clamping device in operative position in said machine.
