A needle thread-wiping device for a sewing machine comprises a guide tube having a predetermined lengthwise configuration, an elongated resilient thread-wiping finger shiftably supported in said guide tube and having a portion movable to project from said guide tube, said thread-wiping finger having a normal lengthwise configuration differing from the lengthwise configuration of said tube, and a thread-engaging means on said portion of said thread-wiping finger. A plate 23, secured by bolts 21 to the rear face of a sewing machine upper arm 12, has secured thereto by bolts 24 a solenoid 25, and fulcrums on a stud 31 a bell crank lever 29, one arm 28 of which is pivoted at 27 to the armature 26 of solenoid 25. A block 51, clamped to the lower bearing bush (50) for the presser bar 18, has secured thereto by means of a screw 57 a block 56 co-operating with block 51 to clamp in position a pair of vertical guide tubes 60L, 60R. Slidable within the latter are respective rods L5L, (L5R) which are secured at their upper ends to a block 71 and at their lower ends to respective spring blades 62L, 62R formed at their free ends with respective points 63L, 63R and hooks 64L, 64R. Block 71 is pivoted at 37 to the other arm 35 of bell crank lever 29, and a spring 38 acts on arm 35 to bias block 71 upwardly for positioning the ends of the blades 62L, 62R within the tubes 61L, 61R. When the needles 16, 17 are raised at the end of a stitching operation, solenoid 25 is energised, whereby block 71 descends and the ends of the blades 62L, 62R are projected from the tubes 60L, 60R and are guided by the curved ends of the latter to traverse the paths of the needles 16, 17 and to engage the needle threads with the hook portions 64L, 64R. When solenoid 25 is de-energised, hook portions 64L, 64R again retract within the tubes 60L, 60R carrying the needle threads therewith. The device may be combined with the thread-severing means described in Specification 1,179,964, in which the machine initially stops with the needles lowered, then re-starts to raise the needles, when the thread-severing means operate, the thread-wiping means being arranged to operate slightly in advance of the threadsevering means.
