1335491 Sewing machines CLINTON INDUSTRIES INC 19 April 1971 [27 Jan 1970] 20435/71 Heading DIG In a sewing machine with a needle thread cutting element 42 on the presser foot 23 adjacent a needle slot 24 therein, a first thread drawing means 82 for drawing the thread tail between the raised needle and the foot across the cutting element 42 and a second thread drawing means 63 operative on the thread T between the needle and a releasable tensioner 28 to draw thread from a reel or other source beyond the tensioner, a device such as a solenoid-operated rod 44 with an arm 50 is operable to sequentially move the means 82 past the thread tail, release the tensioner 28, actuate the second means 63 to draw out thread and then retract the means 63, reactivate the tensioner and retract the first means to gather and cut the thread tail. The cutting element 42 with its edge 43 is part of a resilient sheet member 36 secured to the presser foot post 17. The first thread drawing means comprises a bent wire 83 with a hook 87 at one end with a narrow bight which holds the thread as it is cut. The wire 83 is adjustably mounted in a bore in a rod 80 extending from one end of a lever 76 which is pivoted about a pivot 77 (Fig. 8) by a pin 79 of the lever engaging a vertical slot 54 of the arm 50 which is secured to the solenoidoperated rod 44. The second thread drawing means comprises a fixed open loop 60 and two open loops 72 through which the thread T passes, the loops 72 being mounted on a member 64 which is adjustably secured by screws 66 to and is movable with the arm 52. The adjustable thread tensioner 28 (Fig. 1a) has a fixed disc 29 and a disc 29' which is movable axially by a rod 47' as its end is engaged by the free end of a bent rod 47 secured to the solenoid operated rod 44.
