Abstract

1320336 Conductive extrusion SUPERFLEXIT Ltd 30 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969] 58605/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] Electrostatic charges are dissipated from an extruded polytetrafluoroethylene tube, by means of one, or a pair of opposed conductive strips extending longitudinally of the tube interior surface. The conductive strip may comprise a dispersion of 3 to 25% by weight of carbon black, or iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ), dispersed in a matrix of polyethylene polypropylene, or polytetrafluoroethylene. In the described embodiment, particulate p.t.f.e., with white spirit lubricant and cadmium red pigment, is compression moulded into a pair of semi-annular preforms within a diametrically partitioned cylindrical tubular mould cavity, on one side thereof around a semi-annular brass insert, to define on this side a semi-annular preform of increased internal radius on to the internal surface of which, after removal from the mould, a conductive mixture of particulate p.t.f.e., including carbon black and white spirit, is manually packed to the thickness of the other preform, and compressed under a pressure of 10 to 20 p.s.i., using the brass insert. Both preforms are then placed in an extruder for extrusion as the tube, and thereafter sintered e.g. at 700, 720, 800‹ F., after drying at 300 or 320‹ F.
