Abstract

1,191,647. Moulding stuffing-box packings. HENRY CROSSLEY (PACKINGS) Ltd. 12 June, 1968 [11 Sept., 1967], No. 41308/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] Stuffing-box packing comprises an extruded body of unsintered P.T.F.E. filled with one or more particulate materials having a higher thermal conductivity than P.T.F.E. Preferably, one of the fillers is graphite. As an example, packing may be made from a mixture of 30-70% P.T.F.E. dispersion polymer, 10- 40% graphite, 10-25% mineral oil and 5-20% molybdenum disulphide powder, tungsten disulphide and silver sulphide powder. Powdered graphite, molybdenum disulphide, tungsten disulphide and silver sulphide are first mixed with unsintered P.T.F.E. polymer, mineral oil is then added and the whole further mixed. The mixture is then moulded under pressure to form a solid billet from which the packing cord is extruded.
