Abstract

1474976 Seals F J DORMER 19 Sept 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 40937/74 Heading F2B A packing for use in, e.g. a pump stuffing box 4 consists of a viscid fibreless core 1 of P.T.F.E. with at least one of the following additives; silicone oil, graphite and molybdenum disulphide and a porous sheath 2. The sheath 2 may be of knitted fibres impregnated with a dispersion of P.T.F.E. The packing is axially compressed by nut 6 against shaft 3, as that frictional heat causes the material of the core to exude through the sheath 2 and lubricate the shaft. To produce the core, P.T.F.E. powder is stirred into a 30% aqueous dispersion by weight of P.T.F.E. Graphite, silicone oil and molybdenum disulphide are kneaded into the mixture. The mixture together with granules of P.T.F.E. is extruded in rod form, heated and air dried, before the sheath is applied.
