Abstract

1479590 Polytetrafluoroethylene tube SUPERFLEXIT Ltd 14 Nov 1974 [7 Nov 1973 12 Dec 1973] 51633/73 and 57605/73 Addition to 1320336 Heading F2P [Also in Division B5] An extruded polytetrafluoroethylene tube includes one or more conductive strips extending longitudinally of the tube interior or exterior surface, for the dissipation of electrostatic charges. The tube may be of “ internal diameter and 0À040 inch wall thickness and with a single interior conducting strip of which conductivities are stated. The tube is extruded (see Divisions B4-B5) from a unitary tubular preform, compression moulded from p.t.f.e. particles and lubricant together with an insert defining the conductive strip and comprising 3 to 25% by weight of carbon black or iron oxide particles dispersed in a matrix of particles of the p.t.f.e., or polyethylene, or polypropylene, and lubricant. The same lubricant, e.g. white spirit, or naptha, is preferably employed for the insert as for the remainder of the preform and comprises, for the insert 6, to 24% and preferably 16% by weight on the weight of the plastics particles of the matrix. After extrusion, the tube is dried to remove lubricant and then sintered at above 700‹ F. Drying may be at room temperature for 24 hours, followed by sintering at 740‹ F. for 2 hours. Alternatively, the extrusion can be passed continuously through a drying, and then through a sintering run respectively at 320‹ and at 800‹ F. or above.
