Abstract

1320230 Inlet and outlet passages; valve seats A E ATKINSON 26 Aug 1970 40983/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] In a fluid inlet or outlet arrangement for use in an I. C. engine a straight passage 3 having a non-circular elliptical cross-section at right angles to its axis has a valve seat 2 extending around a periphery of the passage and arranged to define an aperture 1 of circular cross-section, whose centre lies on the axis of passage 3, a portion of which extending to the valve seat does not increase in cross-section towards the valve seat. A valve member 4 having an annular valve face 5 and a valve stem 7 extending coaxially with respect to face 5 is arranged with stem 7 extending through a side passage 8 so as to be moved axially to open and close the valve. The valve seat 2 may be integrally formed or may be an annular insert (9), Fig. 5 (not shown) which may be shrunk, pressed or screwed in position.
