Abstract

1320074 Charging I.C. engines; reducing exhaust pollutants K NOWAK 22 June 1971 [23 June 1970] 29074/71 Heading F1B Reciprocating piston I.C, engine having spark ignition has additional air injected into the cylinder at least once during the expansion stroke, followed by an additional spark to cause further combustion. The complete combustion of the fuel reduces pollutants in the exhaust gases. Combustion air is initially induced through an inlet valve 6 and while the piston is travelling away from the cylinder head on the expansion stroke, additional air is forced in through a nozzle 5. If the fuel is injected through a nozzle 3, then this nozzle may also be used to inject air subsequently. The air to be injected is pumped by a compressor 8 into a reservoir 9 from which a line 10 leads to each cylinder. Flow to the injector 5 is controlled by a valve 11 actuated by a cam 13 on an engine driven shaft 12. The cam may have one or more lobes according to the number of additional air injections required. A pair of contacts 15 operated by a stem projecting from the valve control the provision of the additional sparks. Alternatively the distributor may be modified to provide the requisite number of sparks during the expansion stroke.
