Abstract

1318284 Labelling machine PRICEMASTER Ltd 10 May 1971 [9 July 1970] 33436/70 Heading B8F [Also in Division B6] A labelling machine, manually or automatically operated, comprises a label bearing strip 4 which passes, from a supply spool 3, over idle rollers 6, 7, 5, 8 to a spool 9. An article to be labelled pivots an arm 17 about an axis 16 causing a label to unpeel due to the small diameter of the roller 5, a roller 19 then applying the label to the article. After the article passes, the spring 18 restores the arm to the rest position (shown), a rod 13 turning the spool 9 by way of a one-way clutch so as to pick up the label length of the strip. The machine may be pivotally mounted on a member 14 fixed near a conveyer, or may be adapted to be manually held. A pawl 21 pivots to trap the strip against a plate 20 during label application after a label length has been pulled from a supply spool 3. This arrangement enables the machine to be actuated by articles of different heights on the conveyer. If the articles exceed a certain height, the machine pivots on the member 14 against the bias of a spring 15. In a modification, the roller 19 may be a date (or other cipher) stamp, an inking roller being carried by the arm 17. The apparatus may also be used to apply decalcomania transfers, the roller 19 then being kept damp so as to cause the transfer to set on the article.
