A device for applying liquid to strip material before applying the strip material to a workpiece comprises a reservoir for the liquid and applying a roller mounted so that it is rotated by the movement of the strip past the roller and there being means automatically actuated on actuation of the operator actuated member which also initiates a cycle of operations of the strip material applying machine for rotating the roll prior to the initiation of a cycle of operations of the strip material applying machine relatively to the strip material in contact therewith sufficiently to ensure that any dried out portion of the periphery of the roll is moved out of contact with the strip material and the liquid is then carried round by the roll and applied to the strip material. Strip material of the kind described in Specification 642,964 is passed through apertures 24, 26 in guides 20 and 22 on a bracket 38 secured to a machine for applying strip material to workpieces of the kind described in Specification 664,645, [Group VII]. The strip material.passes over a coating roll 30 mounted to rotate freely in a reservoir 48 of liquid to activate the adhesive already on the strip. The strip is then passed over guide pulleys 34 and 40. The strip is pressed into contact with the roller 30 by a brush 32 mounted on lugs on a lid 53 and liquid is supplied to the reservoir by a gravity feed from container 62 to maintain a constant level. During coating the roll 30 is driven by the strip. Before the feed of the strip commences the roll 30 is clutched to a driven shaft to rotate the roll in the liquid and provide a coating on the roll. A treadle connected to a " Bowden " (Registered Trade Mark) cable 70 is operated to first rotate the roll and then operate the machine. The cable is connected to a rod 72 slidable through lugs 74, 84 on the bracket, and having a bifurcated head 76 supporting a slide 30 having a cam groove 58 for a roller 90 (not shown) mounted on one arm 94 of a two-armed lever 94, 96 pivoted on a pin 98 on a cross piece 100 bridging lugs 102 on a guide 86 for the slide. The lever 96 has a gear segment 104 engaging a gear 106 on a shaft 108 which supports an arm with a pawl 114 pivotally mounted. The pawl is spring urged to engage a ratchet wheel 50 on the shaft of the roller 30. Depressing the treadle causes the roller 90 to engage in an inclined part of the cam groove 88 to swing the levers 94, 96 to rotate the gears 104, 106 and to cause the pawl to drive the ratchet gear 50 and the roller 30. Further depression of the treadle initiates the strip applying machine and the roller 90 is engaged in a vertical part of the cam track whereby the roller 30 can rotate free from any drive.
