Abstract
782,992. Applying adhesive tape. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (Boston Machine Works Co.). Nov. 24, 1955 [Nov. 25, 1954], No. 34141/54. Class 73 [Also in Group XXIV] A machine for applying tape 44, Fig. 2, to a shoe upper 42, or other workpiece, comprises a pair of pressing members 32, 34, Fig. 1, a stationary knife 80, means for drawing the tape against the knife, and a trigger member 102 arranged automaticlly to put in motion the said means as the trailing edge of the workpiece passes from under the said member 102. In the construction shown, the members 32, 34 are in the form of rolls, of which the roll 32 is mounted on a driven shaft 46 and the roll 34 is idly journalled on an upright 48 which can be rocked by manual operation of a lever 56. The upright carries a curved guide 82 for the workpiece, and the machine frame 30 has a bracket 90 for carrying a spring-urged rod 88 fitted with further workpiece guides 84, 100. Adhesive tape 44 passes from a supply roll through a spring detent on a rocking lever 64 and thence to a supporting roll 74 at the lower end of a slide bar 70 forming part of the means for drawing the tape against the knife The bar 70 is adiustably connected to the lever 64 and the latter is rocked by a cam 124, see also Figs. 10, 11 and 17, mounted on a continuously rotating shaft 130. Clutch mechanism. This mechanism, which is associated with the cam 124, is for the purpose of regulating the timing of the severing of the tape 44 whereby the trailing end of the tape may be flush with the end of the workpiece, or spaced therefrom as in Fig. 2. The clutch includes a spring 136 normally gripping a drum 134, Fig. 17, on the shaft 130, and having its ends 138, 140, attached to collars 128, 132 which are loose on the shaft; the cam 124 is mounted on the collar 128. The two collars will therefore normally rotate with the shaft, but if the collar 132 is held against rotation the spring 134 will expand so that it no longer grips the drum, whereby the other collar 128 and hence the cam 124 also cease to rotate. Two separate means are provided for temporarily holding the collar 132 against rotation, both means serving as an abutment for a latch 142 mounted in the collar and urged outwardly by a spring. One abutment is a dog 150 projecting from an adjustable lever 152 rotatable about the axis of shaft 130, and the other is a dog 120 on the armature 116 of solenoid 114, Fig. 1. Action. With the latch 142 resting against the under surface of the dog 120 and the upright 48 having ben swung to the position shown in Fig. 1 after looping a shoe upper over it, the seam 40, Fig. 2, is slid along the guide 82 and during its movement the seam receives the adhesive tape which is subsequently pressed into position by the rolls 32, 34. Before reaching the tape applying roll, however, the seam lifts the trigger 102 of a micro-switch serving to energize the solenoid 114 and thus retracting the dog 120. The collar 132, and also the collar 128 and cam 124, now rotate a short distance with shaft 130, the distance depending on the setting of the dog 150 which holds the parts as shown in Fig. 10. As seen in this Figure the dog setting determines the remaining distance for the cam to travel clockwise for the follower 122, mounted on the lever 64, to reach the corner 168. When the trailing edge of the seam passes the trigger the latter descends, the solenoid is thereby de-energized, the armature 116 moves to the right under spring action, and, as shown in Fig. 11, the dog 120 pushes the latch 142 away from engagement with the dog 150. By this means the cam now rotates with the shaft 130 and the lever 64 descends thus lifting the bar 70 to bring the tape against the severing knife 80.
