Abstract

1,195,767. Labelling machines. MACHINES AUTOMATED Ltd. 3 Oct., 1968, No. 46886/68. Heading B8F. In a labelling machine in which the labels are stripped from a backing strip 28, the backing strip is intermittently fed by driving rollers 22, 46 and is braked when the driving rollers are moved apart to interrupt the drive. In the form shown the feed roller 46 is attached to levers 52 which are pivoted about hinge pins 54. A roller 66 attached to the levers 52 presses the strip 28 against an adjustably and eccentrically mounted brake rod 70 to brake it. A solenoid 56, which controls the pivoting of the levers 52 is controlled by adjustable photo-cells or microswitches detecting the labels and the articles to be labelled. A small diameter roller 42 strips the labels from the backing strip and a pressure roller 44 attaches them to the articles. Whilst braked, the backing strip between the supply roll 86 and brake 66, 70 is tensioned by a spring- biased roller 78 which controls a pad 84 braking the supply roll 86. A slipping clutch driving a take-up axle 76 allows continuous rotation of the feed roller 22 without the backing strip breaking. The levers 52 and guides for the backing strip are attached to an adjustable table 26 by pivoted plates 24.
