Abstract

1,155,624. Labelling-machines. METOGESELLSCHAFT OSCAR KIND m.b.H. 31 Aug., 1966 [14 Sept., 1965], No. 38789/66, Heading B8F. Self-adhesive labels 5 are automatically applied to an article (7), Fig. 2 (not shown), carried on a conveyer below the applying apparatus, when the article actuates electro -mechanical or electro-optical sensing means which rotates an electromagnet 13 having a shaft 14 to raise an arm 15 fixed to the shaft 14 and enable a dispensing arm 3 to be lowered by means of a spring 6. As the arm 15 is raised, a lever 1 pivots anticlockwise on a spindle 18 due to a roller 16 on the arm 15 moving in a slot 17 in the lever 1. A catch 20 pivoted at 73 on the lever 1 is tripped by a pin 21<SP>1</SP>, thereby causing a roller 72 to engage the lever 71 of a brake 70 and release a strip 28 carrying the labels 5. A loop of the strip 28 is formed by a hoop 27 movable with the arm 15 to draw the strip from a supply reel (not shown). This action prevents undue drag by rollers 8, 9 which withdraw the strip when the labels 5 have been taken off it. The labels are deflected from the strip on passing a pulley 11 and applied by a roller 4, each label being previously printed by a roller 31. In rising, the end 49 of the arm 15 lifts a catch 48 to bring the roller 31 up against an inking pad 51. The electromagnet 13 is de-energized when the arm 15 is fully raised, thereby causing the arm to swing down under the force of a spring 15a until it meets a stop 41. As the arm 15 falls, the catch 20 engages the pin 21<SP>1</SP> to rotate the rollers 8, 9 and cause the strip to be withdrawn a label's length. The roller 8 is controlled by a roller 23 engaging between adjacent pins 21. The end of the arm 3 adjacent its pivot 2 carries a cam 35 loaded by a spring 37; the nose (38), Fig. 4 (not shown), of the cam being urged against the lever 1 so that a constant pressure is applied to each of the labels in spite of varying article sizes. As the arm 15 descends, the lever 1 is swung down by members 16, 17 and presses on cam 35. The dispensing arm 3 is thereby caused to swing up. The dispensing arm may be adjustable in length. The electromagnet 13 may be replaced by a pneumatically-operated cylinder.
