Abstract

1,133,716. Paying out filamentary material; doffing and donning. NATIONAL-STANDARD CO. 31 Dec., 1965 [23 Feb., 1965], No. 55450/65. Headings DID and D1J. As the filament W Fig. 1 is drawn off the reel 12, it passes over a fixed sheave 16 and then over a displaceable sheave 25, the sheave 25 being on a festoon arm 22, 23, 24 biased away from the sheave 16 by a spring 33 with a force which is substantially constant over a first predetermined range of pivotal movement Y of the festoon arm 22, 23, 24. A brake shoe unit is attached to the festoon arm and is so arranged that when the festoon arm is in a predetermined position, the tangential force exerted on the brake shoe unit by the brake drum as it rotates is operative to produce a force which further urges the brake shoe unit into engagement with the drum. The arm 23 carries leg members 52, 53 provided with brake pads 54, 55 acting on a brake drum 44 rigid with the shaft on which the reel 12 is mounted. The leg members 52, 53 are biased towards the drum 44 relatively to a slide 65 mounted on a pin 66 carried by the leg portion 23, the biasing means being a spring 62, Fig. 3, between the slide 61 and a plate 56 rigid with the leg members 52, 53. Upon movement of the festoon arm 22, 23, 24 to a predetermined position in which the slide 65 compresses the brake spring means 62 to its minimum length within a pipe 57, the slide 65 will engage the pipe 57. When this occurs, the clockwise rotation of the brake drum 44 tends to rotate the brake means 3, carrying the brake pads 54, 55, in a clockwise direction so that the festoon arm 22, 23, 24 tends to rotate about the pivot 19 in a manner increasing the pressure of the brake pads 54, 55 on the drum 44. If the filament W breaks, the festoon arm is pulled to the right by the spring 33 to cause the spring means acting on the leg members 52, 53 to be compressed to an extent causing instant stoppage of the drum 44 by the brake pads 54, 55. As the sheave 25 moves from right to left, due to increasing tension in the filament W, the pressure exerted on the drum 44 by the brake pads 54, 55 decreases due to the resulting reducing compression of the spring 62. A tension spring 67 serves to bias the pad 54 against the drum 44. A spring 37 is provided to cushion excessive movements to the left of the arms 22, 23, 24 at the commencement of a winding operation; and a reaction member 36 on a side frame 5 limits clockwise movement of the festoon arms. Doffing and Donning To enable a fresh reel 12 to be placed in position, the festoon arm 22, 23, 24 can be swung to the left and held there by means of a slip 40 on the fixed arm 14 engaging with a coupling point 42 on the arm 24. The reel to be loaded into position is then rolled up an inclined surface 71 to cause portions of its shaft (45) to be lifted on to ramps 73 so that the reel can then roll along the ramps 73 to a position where cam followers 80 on the reel shaft (45) settle on to supporting surfaces 10 of the apparatus. Thereafter, latches 84 are lowered to a setting shown in Fig. 1 to retain the reel shaft in position.
