Abstract

A machine has different ornamenting stations for carrying out individual ornamenting operations distributed at stationary points around the periphery of a plate intermittently rotated and carrying radially a number of chucks which are continuously rotatable about their axes and on which the tumblers or the like glass articles to be ornamented can be supported so as to be brought into register with the different ornamenting stations. Tumblers 13 are supported on chucks 8 on spindles 7 carrying gears 9 which are driven by teeth 12 on a plate 10 rotated by a driven shaft 4. The spindles are supported in sleeves 6 on a plate 5 intermittently rotated by projections 14 beneath the plate which engage the inner part of a two-part cam 15 at the upper end of a continuously driven shaft 15a. An arcuate annular plate 23 beneath the plates 5 and 10 carries the ornamenting stations A to G. <PICT:0787481/III/1> <PICT:0787481/III/2> <PICT:0787481/III/3> A bracket 27 adjustably mounted on the plate 23 has a slot 26 for adjusting the mounting of a shaft 25 of a carrier 24 for a steel roller supplied with glue from a container 36. The roller 29 contacts a rubber roller 38 which applies a stripe to a tumbler. The shaft 28 is rotated by a flexible shaft 31 having an end gear 35 meshing with a driven gear 34. The bracket 27 carries an adjustable pusher member 41 to vary the pressure of the roller on the tumbler and an adjustable stop 42 to prevent the carrier from dropping and the rubber roller from touching a chuck not carrying a tumbler. The chucks with tumblers pass stations A and B where stripes of glue are applied then beneath a hopper 54 which supplies frost. At stations D and E brushes wipe off excess frost and at E and F lines of colour are applied. Further stations may ornament by printing. Each tumbler is secured on a chuck by a stop 44 on a rod 43 having a tube 48 fitting over a tube 46 on the sleeve 6. A spring 50 within the tube 46 urges the stop to engage the tumbler. The tubes 46, 48 have offset ends which are disengaged by a cam striking a lever 45 on the rod to release the stop 44. The tumbler can then be removed by rotating the rod. A further cam rotates the lever 45 to secure the next tumbler on the chuck.
