Abstract

1318242 Excavating earth; subaqueous foundations SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 21 Aug 1970 40450/70 Headings E1F and E1H A body is sunk into the earth's surface at a location consisting of unconsolidated completely water-saturated particles by supplying water to the surface at a rate which is such as to scour those particles present directly below the body and to fluidize without scouring the particles around the body, while lowering the body. When the body has reached the desired depth the water supply rate is reduced, preferably to 1/3, to facilitate consolidation of the particles. A separate supply of water may be provided for consolidation of particles above the body. Consolidation may also be aided by draining water through conduits in the body. The body may be a sea anchor, a foundation pile, e.g. for a submerged oil storage domeshaped container, a leg for a structure such as an oil production platform, lighthouse, weather station or radar post, or a large caisson for land reclaiming or harbour building. The conduit system for supplying the water may be integral with or separate from the body, or it may form the body when it is itself sunk prior to the lowering of a structure.
