Abstract

1317548 Flattening and stretching tobacco leaves AMF Inc 26 Aug 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 40046/71 Heading A2C [Also in Division B8] A tobacco leaf is fed, stem end first, over a feed plate 76 and into a chamber 10 where two cooperating grooved belts 46, 62 grip the stem and transport it through the chamber 10. Suction, applied through passages 22, 26 in walls 20, 24 of ducts formed in side end members 16, 18 of the chamber 10, cause air to be drawn through longitudinal slots 28, 34 (within which the belts 46, 62 run) so as to flow over both surfaces of the leaf from the stem laterally outward to the leaf edges and unravel the leaf. The leaf then passes onto an air permeable conveyer belt 78 which is overlain by two diverging air permeable belts 88, 90 where flattening and stretching of the leaf is effected. The degree and direction of the stretching forces is adjustable by control of suction applied to the belts 88, 90, 92 and control of the relative speeds at which the various conveyer belts are driven. Optionally, a grooved belt 104 is provided to contact the top surface of the conveyer belt 78 to continue the guidance of the leaf by maintaining the central positioning of the stem of the leaf relative to the belt 78.
