Abstract

1316678 Developing crimp in filaments FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 3 June 1970 [3 June 1969] 26782/70 Heading D1F A process for the manufacture of threedimensionally crimped fibres and filaments of synthetic high-polymers from filaments or tows which are wetted, and to which a latent crimp has been conferred by producing an orientation gradient over their cross-sectional area, comprises drawing the filaments or tows, drying them at a temperature ranging between 20‹C below the second order transition temperature and 35‹C below the melting point of the filaments, without permitting shrinkage, and then developing the crimp at a temperature ranging between 10‹C below the second order transition temperature and 35‹C below the melting point of the filaments, without applying tension. The preferred temperature ranges are stated to be as follows; drying-between 90‹C and 160‹C; developing the crimp-between 60‹C and 230‹C, preferably 90‹C to 130‹C. The filaments may be cooled after drying and then subjected to heat treatment to develop the crimp. The synthetic filaments may be of polyester, or polyester amide, preferably polyethylene terephthalate. In a preferred embodiment, the filaments are drawn during the drying and cooling processes by from 1 to 50%. preferably 1 to 10%, based on the length of the filaments before this drawing process. The drying may be effected by passage of the filaments or tow about a heated draw roll, and cooling by passage about a cooled draw roll. The crimp is preferably developed by allowing the filaments to fall freely onto a conveyor belt, and directed superheated steam through the tow. The undrawn filaments or tow may be passed through a brightening bath which bath may also contain substances favourably influencing the sliding and adhesion properties of the fibres and preventing electrostatic charges. Drying of the filaments or tow may also be effected on a heated metal surface, in hot air, by infra-red heating or in a high-frequency alternating electromagnetic field.
