Abstract

In a method of crimping filaments e.g. twisted or "twistless multifilament yarn, of glass, quartz or ceramic material, the filaments are passed through a preheating zone and heated therein to a temperature below the softening temperature of the glass &c., fed into the crimping chamber of a heated stuffer-box crimper and then directly into a setting chamber of greater cross-sectional area than the crimping chamber (so that the mass of crimped filaments open therein) and wherein the filaments are heated to about the softening temperature for a time sufficient to relieve stresses due to crimping, to annial the filaments and to burn off any sizing. The crimped filaments are withdrawn in the form of a compacted "core", and/or flattened web from which a single end of yarn may be subsequently extracted, or as a yarn which may be resized or coated, as by spraying or passage over a coating roller, in one or more (not necessarily successive) stages, and the size may temporarily bond filaments at their points of intersection. The size prevents interfilament "saw-action" breakages during subsequent processing or usage before or after winding into a package. In apparatuses described, a single member comprises walls forming a setting chamber communicating with the crimping chamber and the walls are heated to the higher temperature and transfer heat by conduction to the crimping chamber to heat the filaments to a lower temperature. A preheating chamber may precede the rollers feeding the filaments into the crimping chamber. The crimping and setting chambers may be formed by a series of concentric, telescoping tubes and hot gases may be introduced thereinto. The form of the final product e.g. intermittently and/or irregularly, helically or "saw-tooth" crimped yarn, may be determined by variation of back-pressure in the crimping chamber, the temperatures in different (including preheating) zones, the duration of the heat treatments, the initial twist in the yarn, feed rates and tension of the yarn leaving the setting zone.
