Abstract

762,391. Preparing textile filaments for stapling. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1955 [March 3, 1954], No. 6206/54. Class 120 (3). Drawn and crimped filaments of synthetic linear condensation polymers such as polyamides and polyesters are prepared for cutting into staple lengths by drying and heating at a temperature above 100‹C. and, in the hot or cooled state, coating with a lubricant whilst spread, as by passage over a convex surface, into a ribbon assisted by an electrostatic charge on them. The heating (which may also constitute the setting stage of a filament crimping process) may be effected by collecting the filaments into drums which are placed in a steam-heated oven, or by advancing the filaments, as by means of a blast of hot air or steam, through a heating zone formed by a flexible tube which may be bent into a coil. The lubricant (or size or finishing liquid) may be applied by continuous spraying, and, if in the form of an aqueous solution, the water content is limited or reduced (by evaporation) to not more than 4 per cent. the coating of the filaments may be assisted by the electrostatic charge on the filaments or a charge imparted to the coating material. The charge on the filaments may be induced by passing the filaments through a tension gate or over a number of tensioning pins.
